Generic Paxil
Paxil is a drug patented by the British pharmaceutical company GlaxoSmithKline for the treatment of depression, anxiety, obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD), post traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), and premenstrual dysphoric disorder (PMDD). It is sold in the United States under the brand name Paxil and in Europe under the name Seroxat.
On June 29, 2007, GlaxoSmithKline’s patent on Paxil expired and the FDA began approving generic versions of the drug, called peroxetine. Since then, GSK’s market share for peroxetine and antidepressant drugs has fallen substantially.
Generic Paxil, or peroxetine, is available from several drug manufacturers including Sandoz Pharmaceuticals, Apotex, Alphapharm, Teva pharmaceuticals, Mylan, Zydus pharmaceuticals, Caraco, Aurobindo Pharma and Cygnus Specialities.
The generic version of Paxil, peroxetine, has been related to the same severe side effects as the brand name drug, including heart-defect birth defects in infants of mothers taking the drug as well as suicidal, homicidal or otherwise violent behaviors in some users. The

According to Bloomberg, Glaxo has paid an average of $1.2 million per case for birth defects, $2 million for suicide cases, $300,000 for attempted suicide cases and $50,000 for lawsuits involving dependency or addiction.
